Finding a Job During a Recession
By Jana Matthews

The frustration of idleness has hit 15 million Americans who are currently unemployed. With many businesses still on the verge of closing their doors, another 15 - 20% of people anticipate losing their job within the next year. This transition will leave an indelible mark in history.

Many people have been searching for a job for over a year, keeping a positive outlook while faced adversity is a challenge. Our minds race with thoughts of doubt and fear. But our thoughts and emotions impact the success in finding a new job. Staying positive in tough times is an art, and there are some simple steps you can do each day to keep your spirits up.

First, each day do something to help you focus on your goal. You can recite affirmations such as, "I'm so grateful for my job and the benefits I receive from doing great work," "I am appreciated for my skills and talents and I'm paid well to provide them to others." We have so many defeating thoughts, reciting positive affirmations helps create new channels of programming in our conscious and subconscious minds. The more often the thoughts are recited the more ingrained they become in our minds.

Second, we think in pictures, so visualize yourself in the perfect job or what your day would be when you're working is a powerful way of creating it.

Third, imagine how would you "feel" if you received a call for the job. How would you react? We manifest from our passionate side; emotions. For example, if you feel frustrated you'll attract more opportunities to be frustrated, asking yourself, "Why is this happening to me?" You receive exactly what your emotions are subconsciously tapped into. You always have a choice of how you'll emotionally respond to something. It takes a conscious choice to shift your response. Once you've learned to consciously respond, you'll create what you want.

Fourth, an attitude of gratitude helps you attract more to you, so write down what you do have in your life. It's easy to get caught up in what we don't have, and to receive more we have to be grateful for what we do have. This list can be as simple or complex as you want. During frustrating times in my life I've been grateful for fresh running water, money to keep the electricity on, a moment alone to go for a walk, or a neighbor who watched my kids so I could go out for the evening. Instead of thinking, "I've got the money to pay this bill, but what about all these others?" By focusing on the little things in life we appreciate, we begin to attract more of what we want to us.

Finally, keep a positive frame of mind by creating a support system to boost you up when feeling defeated. It's okay to ask for help. We all need it from time to time. Some people believe asking for help is a sign of weakness, when in fact it is a sign of strength. We are in this situation for a reason and part of the lesson is to learn how to work together for the greater good of us all. By working together we gain insight into ourselves and shift outdated perspectives.

It's important to find balance in life. Balance between job, family, friends, and personal time can be a juggling act. This time in history is an opportunity to shift our old thought patterns and beliefs about ourselves and how we interact in the world. We can look at this transition as a curse or a blessing. It begins with our thoughts and how we choose to react to change.
